 What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a therapeutic system based primarily upon the interactions of the spine and nervous system, the method of treatment usually being to adjust the segments of the spinal column, primarily with the hands, to allow the body to heal itself.

Chiropractic focuses on the relationship of the structure of the body (bones, muscles, and cartilage) and function (nervous system and organs). To manage this relationship chiropractic utilizes manual manipulations, referred to as ‘adjustments’ of the spine and joints of extremities to decrease pain sensation and restore normal joint function. Diet and nutrition are utilized to enhance the function of the body. Doctors of Chiropractic recognize the value and responsibility of working together with other health care practitioners when in best interest of the patient.

Chiropractic is concerned with the prevention of disease and restoration of health, and focuses particular attention on the subluxation. A subluxation is a complex of functional and/or structural and/or pathological joint changes that compromise nerve integrity and may influence organ system function and general health. A subluxation is evaluated, diagnosed and managed through the use of chiropractic procedures based on the best available rational and empirical evidence.

Chiropractic works by restoring normal joint function through joint manipulation and soft tissue work. The use of nutrition and rehabilitative exercises are utilized to help with restoration of function. When normal function is resorted, other body systems are also affected, which can help increase your health through many avenues.

Chiropractors receive expert knowledge of the body through the study of basic sciences, clinical sciences, body mechanics, and the art of chiropractic techniques. Chiropractic curriculum emphasizes anatomy, physiology, pathology, neurology, biomechanics, x-ray, nutrition, and adjusting techniques. In addition, prior to practicing chiropractors must pass a series of National Board Examinations in Basic Sciences, Clinical Sciences, Clinical Diagnosis, Physiotherapy, and a practical examination.
